Rapid Health Facility Assessment Training
01.31.08

Jim Ricca, Capacity Building Advisor of CSTS gave a presentation on the Rapid Health Facility Assessment (R-HFA), version 2.1. The R-HFA was originally designed for use by NGOs within the CSHGP to assess quality of MNCH service delivery and to strengthen relations with District Health Medical Teams. Key areas of information the tool is designed to collect include: availability of a minimal level of infrastructure, supplies, and medications; adherence to national (based on IMCI) protocols for assessment, classification, and management of children under five; and caretaker knowledge of how to administer drugs received for common childhood illnesses (i.e., diarrhea, malaria, and/or pneumonia).

CCF Senegal Community Action for Nutrition and Health Program
12.14.07

CCF has been working in Senegal since 1985 and currently assists approximately 1.8 million children and family members. To improve access to basic health services, CCF implemented a community-based health program in three rural districts in the Mbour Department. They set up 140 health huts and worked with the local population to select volunteer community health workers. In total, 1,300 health workers birth attendants were trained so that mothers and children can access a wide array of health services right in their community. These range from treatment of malaria, TB, respiratory illnesses and wounds to preventive services such as growth monitoring and disease prevention. In addition to Health Huts, CCF-Senegal developed a health education strategy targeting grandmothers who make health decisions within families.

mothers2mothers - HIV Positive "Mentor Mothers"
09.24.07

  • Robin Smalley, mothers2mothers, Co-Founder/International Director

    Play Recording

mothers2mothers is an innovative and powerful HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment support project based in Cape Town that harnesses the power of new mothers who are HIV positive to return to prenatal units trained as "mentor mothers." Using empowerment, education and counseling as tools to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, mothers2mothers combats stigma within families and communities, supports a mother's adherence to medical treatment, and educates new mothers on the importance of exclusive feeding methods...ultimately reducing the likelihood of AIDS orphans. Located in clinics that offer medical treatment to HIV+ women, m2m fills in the gaps so tragically left by the public health system, providing a secure, warm environment where these women can feel safe to share their fears and concerns; fears for the health of their children; fears of disclosure to their partners, friends and family; and the feelings of helplessness engendered by being alone, pregnant and infected with the AIDS virus. Only six years old, mothers2mothers is currently touching over 30,000 women a month at 117 sites in South Africa and Lesotho, and is expanding into Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Swaziland and Malawi.
