CORE Group Members Make Plans for Africa Malaria Day
Africa Malaria Day is celebrated every year on April 25, and this year President Bush is following suit by declaring it Malaria Awareness Day in the United States. CORE Group members and partners have been busy preparing for the various planned activities. The Kenya NGO Alliance Against Malaria (KeNAAM) is planning special events with the Kenyan Ministry of Health, and will post a supplement on both the Standard and Daily Nation, two of the largest newspapers in Kenya. Groupe Pivot in Mali will be using football matches to spread anti-malaria information. The government of Rwanda will launch its new integrated child survival package strategy that includes malaria and has invited organizations to come commemorate the day and promote their programs. For more information about events around the world please visit the Africa Malaria Day 2007 website.

CORE Group Awards Collaborative Grants to ARC and IRC
CORE Group and USAID have selected two proposals from members for scaling-up proven public health intervention(s) as part of an effective and sustainable community-based program effort. After a competitive review process, two initiatives were selected for further development with partner input.

Cambodia's Ministry of Health and numerous international and local NGOs have successfully mobilized community volunteers to implement low-cost interventions in an effort to reduce childhood morbidity and mortality rates. The structure and work of these volunteer systems, however has been largely disjointed and disparate amongst the various health development partners. CORE Group will support American Red Cross, in partnership with the Ministry of Health's Child Survival Management Committee, to carry out a study to better understand best practices on volunteer health worker systems implementing child survival interventions in Cambodia. The MOH has stated that they envision this study serving as a foundation document for future policy development, program design, and implementation, which will provide a volunteer framework, based on best practices for the many health development partners in Cambodia. The research goal is to evaluate the effectiveness, replicability, and sustainability of community volunteers. The study's protocol will be developed collaboratively with MOH, PVOs with MEDICAM, WHO, UNICEF, BASICS, and USAID in order to ensure buy in from multiple organizations and will culminate in a national level policy workshop to disseminate the report findings and develop recommendations together with all stakeholders.

In Rwanda, CORE Group will support International Rescue Committee to assess the effectiveness of providing combined community-based treatment for malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea. As community case management emerges as an important, cost-effective strategy for saving lives, questions remain about the implementation of single-disease versus integrated algorithms for community-based providers. This study will address this issue and explore implications for other country efforts.

Community Case Management Research Updates Available Online
May 4, 2007, from 1:00 to 2:30pm, the CORE Group IMCI Working Group will present the second in a two-part series of research updates on community case management topics. Dr. David Hamer from the Center for International Health and Development at Boston University will present the results of the Young Infants Clinical Signs Study for infants aged 7-59 months, a brief overview of the Lufwanyama Neonatal Survival Project, and preliminary results from a study of the burden of disease due to malaria in pregnancy in the state of Jharkhand, India. Dr. Donald Thea, also of the Center for International Health and Development at Boston University, will present the results of the Zambia Exclusive Breastfeeding Study and its implications for breastfeeding policy in HIV-endemic areas. These presentations will be focused on the practical application of research findings for policy and program improvement.

A recording of part one of the series, featuring Dr. Gary Darmstadt and Dr. Abdullah Baqui of Johns Hopkins University presenting information on community case management for newborns, is now available on the CORE Group website.
