Ten pilot countries -Afghanistan, Bolivia, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Indonesia, Mozambique, and Pakistan- are scheduled to receive sizeable financial support from GAVI to engage civil society organizations (CSOs) in immunization and related health services. While entirely additional, this funding is integrated into the existing GAVI window for Health System Strengthening to allow for a more harmonized and country-driven approach. The next deadline for submission of applications to the GAVI Alliance Secretariat is October 5th 2007.

The GAVI Secretariat will be making the following confirmed country visits to conduct a workshop to explain the new GAVI window of support for CSOs involved in immunization and child health.

Pakistan: September 2-7
DR Congo: September 17-21
Ethiopia: September 24-29
Indonesia: October 15-21
Mozambique: November 25-27 (GAVI Board meeting); Nov. 28-30 (CSO meetings)

In addition to the ten pilot countries, all GAVI-eligible countries are also eligible to receive an additional $10,000 to $100,000 to strengthen coordination and representation of CSOs. Funding for this type of GAVI Alliance CSO support is available from 2007 to October 2009, with October 2009 completion date for all activities. There is no firm deadline for applications, which are welcome on an on-going basis.

Upcoming Elluminate - September 24th
Family planning is regaining priority status on health agendas throughout the developing world, driven largely by the unmet needs of millions of women and families. One significant aide in the effort to support and promote safe family planning comes in the form of a new handbook called, Family Planning: A Global Handbook for Providers. The new handbook offers clinic-based health care professionals in developing countries the latest guidance on providing contraceptive methods.

The September 24th online Elluminate session will provide an overview of the 3-year process for developing the consensus-based, expert guidance. After attending this session, participants will be able to describe:

  • Some of the key consensus questions and controversies covered during the guidance development process
  • How over 40 organizations were invited to participate on many levels to maximize support and joint ownership of the book
  • The key updates from its predecessor, the Essentials of Contraceptive Technology
  • How organizations can obtain copies of the book and the companion wall chart, "Do you know your family planning choices?"
