CORE Hosts Online Learning Sessions on Saving the Lives of Children
The "lives saved" methodology has been adapted to USAID child survival grant programs and used to analyze lives saved by 13 USAID-supported NGO child survival projects. Differences between the "top half" and the "bottom half" of the 13 projects depended on the strength of the community mobilization platforms through which multiple interventions could be delivered. On January 11, 2007, from 11 am to noon EST, Jim Ricca of CSTS, Laban Tsuma of Plan, Eric Swedberg of Save the Children, and Michelle Kouletio of CWI will examine three of these projects and share their community empowerment home care approaches shown to have a high impact on child survival at low cost. Presentations on the lives saved methodology from the recent Child Survival Health Grants Program (CSHGP) Backstop Institute are available online at www.coregroup.org/resources/lives_saved.cfm.

The CORE-developed Community and Household IMCI Implementation Framework has as its first element "Improving partnerships between the facilities and the communities they serve." Aga Khan Health Services Kenya has been instrumental in modeling a process of improving partnerships between health facilities and catchment communities. This has involved community mobilization, effective representation, development, and application of modular training on governance, health information, and financial management. On January 25, 2007, from 11 am to noon EST Dr. Salim Sohani of Aga Khan Health Services Kenya will examine this experience and what impact it has had on communities in terms of health care utilization, cost recovery, and surveillance and what lessons have been learned.

It looks at the status of women today, discusses how gender equality will move all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) forward, and shows how investment in women's rights will ultimately produce a double dividend: advancing the rights of both women and children.
