CORE Group Polio Partners Update
In 2007, efforts coordinated by CORE Group Partners Project Polio Eradication Initiative have significantly contributed to reductions in the numbers of polio cases in India. The field staff of CORE Group, UNICEF, Rotary, and the government of India have been able to successfully mobilize communities and families in even the most hard-to-reach areas- through regular immunization campaigns and routine services - to get the vaccines needed to protect children from the disease. Eradication of polio from Uttar Pradesh district is likely, according to Ellen Coates, Director of the CORE Group Partners Project Polio Eradication Initiative. The USAID project, hosted by World Vision, will continue NGO polio eradication efforts for the next 5 years in four countries, including India.

CORE Group Continues Work On Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Project
CORE Group's Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Project, a two-year, USAID-funded initiative, seeks to enhance preparedness and planning for humanitarian response in countries most vulnerable to high mortality during an influenza pandemic.

Harnessing the Power of New HIV Positive Mothers as "Mentor Mothers" in Prenatal Units

On Wednesday, December 12th, Robin Smalley, mothers2mothers co-founder presented on a mothers2mothers HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment support project based in Cape Town, South Africa that harnesses the power of new mothers who are HIV positive to return to prenatal units trained as "mentor mothers."

Using empowerment, education and counseling as tools to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, mothers2mothers combats stigma within families and communities, supports a mother's adherence to medical treatment, and educates new mothers on the importance of exclusive feeding methods...ultimately reducing the likelihood of AIDS orphans.
