WHO Taps CORE Polio Secretariat Expertise
In September 2006, Dr. Filimona Bisrat, Director of the Polio Secretariat in Ethiopia, was recruited by the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide technical support and assistance to the National Program in Pakistan, specifically focusing on and participating in the national and sub-national immunization day activities and strengthening and improving acute flaccid paralysis surveillance and routine EPI activities. As part of his three-month assignment, Dr. Bisrat worked in four districts in Punjab province to plan and implement mopping-up immunization activities, using house-to-house vaccine delivery, to eliminate the final chains of transmission of wild poliovirus. He helped improve the quality of supplementary immunization activities at national and sub-national level, including the identification and immunization of children never before immunized ('zero dose') and ensuring the highest possible coverage of all target children during all supplementary immunization campaigns. He was also part of an effort to accelerate activities for measles control, including supplementary immunization activities, surveillance, and data analysis. His final report, including recommendations, is available on the CORE website.
