President's Malaria Initiative Expands to Four New Countries
On June 8, US First Lady Laura Bush announced Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Senegal as the newest countries to be added to the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) -- a $1.2 billion, five-year initiative to control malaria in Africa. The four nations will join Tanzania, Uganda, and Angola as focus countries for the PMI, launched last year by President Bush. At the June 8 press event, Mrs. Bush also introduced Mr. R. Timothy Ziemer as the new U.S. Malaria Coordinator. Mr. Ziemer, former Executive Director of CORE Group member World Relief, will have direct authority over both the President's Malaria Initiative and all USAID malaria programs and policy.

In addition, William Fleming, Christian Children’s Fund and CORE Group HIV/AIDS Working Group Co-Chair, spoke about PVO efforts to prevent and control malaria at the June 8 launch. For more on PMI, see link below.
