Malaria Secretariat Coordinator and CORE Group Partner Testifies Before U.S. Congress
Enid Wamani, National Secretariat Coordinator for Malaria and Childhood Illness NGO Secretariat (MACIS) in Uganda, testified before the House Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health to mark Africa Malaria Day. Wamani's testimony on 25 April 2007 brought an African perspective to the hearing, which also featured Timothy Ziemer, President's Malaria Initiative Coordinator; Stefano Lazzari, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria; Nils Daulaire, Global Health Council; Adel Chaouch, Marathon Oil; and Susan Lassen, Episcopal Relief and Development. During her testimony, she stressed the important contributions of civil society organizations in reaching distant communities, and the equal importance of networks to coordinate the activities of those organizations. Prior to her afternoon testimony in Congress, Wamani attended a Rose Garden ceremony at the White House to commemorate the first ever Malaria Awareness Day in the United States.

Child Act Introduced on Capitol Hill
The U.S. Commitment to Global Child Survival Act of 2007 (H.R. 2266), known as the Global Child Survival Act, was introduced by Representatives Betty McCollum (D-MN), Christopher Shays (R-CT), and others on Thursday, May 10th. The Act requires the U.S. government to develop an integrated strategy for supporting the improvement of child and maternal health, creates an inter-agency Child and Maternal Health Task Force to coordinate activities, sets out guidelines for child survival programs, and requires the President to submit an annual report to Congress detailing U.S. efforts to promote child and maternal health and survival globally. It authorizes $600 million in 2008 - increasing steadily through 2012 - to help reduce child deaths by two-thirds and maternal deaths by three quarters by 2015. The Act calls for the establishment of a child survival fund to support sustained reductions in child and maternal mortality rates worldwide, and to promote the health and well-being of poor children and mothers around the globe. Furthermore, the Act continues investments in proven, cost-effective international child and maternal health programs, including the Global Vaccines Initiative and UNICEF, and authorizes the expansion of the Child Survival and Health Grants Program. A Senate version (S. 1418) was introduced on 17 May by Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Gordon Smith (R-OR).

To show your support for this bill, call your Member of the House of Representatives or Senator today and ask them to co-sponsor the Global Child Survival Act. A copy of HR 2266 and some supportive materials to download can be found at the U.S. Coalition for Child Survival.

State of the World's Mothers 2007: Save the Children released their annual State of the World's Mothers report to coincide with Mother's Day. This year's report shows which countries are succeeding, and which are failing, to save the lives of their mothers and young children. It examines the investments in health care and nutrition that make a difference for children, families, and society as a whole. It also points to proven, low-cost solutions that could save the majority of these lives.

Engaging With The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria: A Primer for Faith-Based Organizations: Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, TB & Malaria; Christian Connections for International Health; and World Vision have launched a new handbook, which is designed to serve as a preliminary guide and step for the faith community to learn about the Global Fund's history, structures and politics, and to increase awareness among faith groups about the organization's grant process. It is also intended to help expand partnerships with faith groups based both in America and developing countries. The handbook is available electronically, but the file is very large and takes some time to download.
