Child Survival Health Grants Program Hosts Backstop Institute
The Child Survival Health Grants Program (CSHGP) Backstop Institute is a nine-day event to address priority needs that emerged from grantee and CORE members' needs assessments conducted by CSTS+ and CORE's monitoring and evaluation working group. The institute is targeted to backstop staff and field-based project managers of active CSHGP-supported projects, and will feature two training courses delivered simultaneously: Knowledge, Practice and Coverage (KPC) Training of Survey Trainers (December 4-14) and Program Design, Monitoring, and Evaluation (December 4-12). Participants in both tracks will take part in plenary sessions on complementary topics like lot quality assurance sampling (LQAS), qualitative methods, and utilizing the Lives Saved methodology. In addition, the new Rapid Health Facilities Assessment tool piloted through CSTS+ in 2006 will be introduced in a one-day workshop for all participants.

CORE Partner in Uganda Publishes Paper Describing Public/Private Partnerships
The Malaria and Childhood Illness NGO Secretariat (MACIS) in Uganda, a CORE partner, has published a paper describing work they have done to facilitate public/private partnerships. As part of their ongoing effort to bring health services to hard-to-reach communities in Uganda, MACIS brought together the Ugandan Ministry of Health, district health officers, the Kampala Pharmaceutical Industry, and other public and private groups to organize mobile health clinics in Kanungu District. The clinics were very successful, in one case treating over 750 patients in one day. Their paper describes the lessons learned from the experience.
