Congress Designates November 2005 "Global Health Month"
On October 18, the U.S. Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution designating November 2005 as Global Health Month. The resolution encourages the people of the United States to observe the "Month of Global Health" by participating in key activities, programs, and fundraising in support of worldwide child survival. "The Month of Global Health is a great opportunity to increase awareness of the pressing global health crisis that threatens our own public health and that of all nations around the world," said U.S. Senator Patty Murray, who introduced the resolution. "We must work on a global scale to avert the millions of unnecessary deaths among children caused each year from preventable diseases."

CORE Offers Elluminate Session on Collaboratives
On November 2, the CORE Group will offer an online presentation by Dr. David Nicholas, Director, Quality Assurance Project (QAP), URC-CHS, on improvement collaboratives. A collaborative is a time-limited improvement strategy, usually lasting from 12 to 24 months, that organizes a large number of teams in problem-solving and innovation in a single technical area, with the goal of rapidly spreading existing knowledge or best practices related to that technical topic to multiple settings. Dr. Nicholas will discuss the key principles and strategies of an improvement collaborative, drawing on examples from QAP-supported collaboratives. The session is scheduled for 12:00 noon EST.

BRAC Represents NGOs at PMNCH Launch
On September 12, political leaders, NGOs, professional associations, multilateral agencies and donors launched the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) at UNICEF headquarters in New York. The partnership will support country-led efforts to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5, which call for the reduction of child mortality by two-thirds and maternal mortality by three-quarters by 2015.

Speaking on behalf of NGOs, A. Mushtaque R. Chowdhury of BRAC, an NGO in Bangladesh, addressed why NGOs are essential partners in achieving the MDGS. Chowdhury's full statement is available on the CORE web site.

Featured Resource: "Fever and its treatment among the more and less poor in sub-Saharan Africa"

A recent Health Policy and Planning article by Deon Filmer of the Development Research Group, World Bank, addresses the association between household wealth and the incidence and treatment of fever, as an indicator of malaria, among children in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the article, DHS data from 22 countries in sub-Saharan Africa suggest a weak association between household-level poverty and the incidence of fever among children under 3 years old. Filmer concludes that wealthier households do not typically use bed nets effectively to prevent fever, and rich and poor households alike are affected by overall level of fever.

"Treatment patterns are strongly related to poverty as wealthier households are more likely to seek care or advice," the author notes. "While it is perhaps unsurprising that treatment from private sources increases with household wealth, government services -- despite their public nature -- are typically also used more by wealthier households."
