CORE Group Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Planning (PIP) Project Starts Up
CORE Group, with funding from USAID, will be contributing to pandemic preparedness planning efforts in up to five countries (TBD). CORE will work in partnership with governments, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, UN bodies, AED and Interaction. The 2 year effort aims to 1) strengthen the capability of CORE member organizations to minimize human morbidity and mortality due to an influenza pandemic in high-risk, vulnerable areas in which NGOs operate and 2) develop the necessary local partnerships for effective action. In each of the focus countries, CORE plans to hold a competitive RFA process to identify a "hosting" organization, preferably a CORE member organization, which would manage the in-country activities.

Kathryn Bolles, with Save the Children was named the CORE Group PIP Project Director. Eric Starbuck, with Save the Children will act as the public health advisor for the PIP project. Whitney Pyles, with CARE, will support the project as a community mobilization advisor. All three will remain with their own organizations and commit a percentage of their time to this effort.

For more information about this effort and links to Pandemic Influenza information, please check out the CORE web site:

Hope Worldwide Joins CORE Group
HOPE Worldwide, an international non-governmental organization based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, that delivers sustainable, high-impact, community-based services to the poor and needy around the world, has joined the CORE Group. The majority of HOPE Worldwide's efforts are focused on meeting the health needs of disadvantaged people: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy, childhood diseases, land mines and improvement of health/sanitation. Through a network of professionals and trained volunteers, local communities are given the tools to sustain improved health practices. HOPE worldwide is currently operating a USAID Child Survival and Health Grant in the slums of New Delhi, India and implements several PEPFAR programs. Further information can be found at www.hopeww.org

CORE Welcomes Anna West, New Child Health Coordinator
Anna West, CORE Group's new Child Health Coordinator will coordinate field-testing and finalization of the Community Case Management (CCM) Essentials guide. She will work closely with the IMCI Working Group to develop a Community of Practice for CCM practitioners and will support operations research on integrated CCM by CORE member organizations working in Rwanda. Anna comes to CORE from World Relief, where she provided technical support to child survival programs in Rwanda and Mozambique.

Polio Partners Project to Continue for the Next 5 Years
The CORE Group Polio Partners (CGPP) project, hosted by World Vision, was selected by USAID to continue NGO polio eradication efforts for the next 5 years. The CGPP coordinates and mobilizes community involvement in mass oral polio vaccine immunization campaigns in high-risk areas and the hardest-to-reach populations. It also supports NGO involvement in case detection, reporting, and surveillance for other vaccine preventable diseases. Project efforts will enhance and build upon the work that has been ongoing since1999 in Angola, Ethiopia, India, and Nepal.

African's Women's Magazine Highlights KeNAAM Staff
Through the CORE Group's VOICES project in Kenya, which advocates for a malaria free future, the Kenya NGO Alliance Against Malaria (KeNAAM) worked with a reporter from True Love, an African women's magazine, to develop a feature article on inspirational women leading the fight against malaria in Kenya. The article features four women from government, NGOs, and the research community talking about how malaria affects their lives as women, mothers, and citizens of Kenya and it calls on other women to take up the cause of fighting for malaria control. Christine Pekeshe, KeNAAM's Communications Officer, and Sanyu Kigondu, KeNAAM;s Steering Committee Secretary were both prominently featured in the article. Article on Success of Community-Directed Intervention The Global Forum for Health Research reported earlier this year that using Community-Directed Intervention (CDI) drug delivery techniques-long used for treating river blindness- is successful in combating other diseases like malaria. A multi-country study found that when remote communities are in charge of distribution, malaria treatment, bednet coverage and TB detection rates double, and vitamin A coverage increases-even though the distributors are unpaid.
