CORE Holds Online Learning Session on KPC Module 2
CORE will host "Knowledge, Practice, and Coverage Survey: Measuring the New Infant and Young Child Feeding Indicators" with Kristen Cashin and Megan Deitchler of the FANTA Project on September 28 at 3pm EST. The new KPC 2000+ Module 2: Breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding has been harmonized with DHS survey indicators as much as possible and includes several new indicators. The most significant new indicator is a revised summary Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Practice Indicator for children 6-23 months. The presentation will review the WHO Guiding Principles, which are the basis for the new IYCF practices indicator, compare the differences in the recommendations for breastfed and non-breastfed children, and summarize the changes that have been made to the Module, including an in-depth explanation of the IYCF Practice Indicator for children 6-23 months. Upcoming Elluminates include "Integrating Family Planning into Emergency Settings" with Meriwether Beatty and Melissa Sharer of John Snow Inc on October 25 at 3pm EST.

USAID Plans CSHGP RFA Workshop and Flex Fund Partners Meeting
The USAID FY 2007 RFA Workshop, USAID's annual event for grantees under the Child Survival and Health Grants Program, will be held on October 4, 2006, in Washington DC. The one-day workshop will include a morning orientation session for new grantees and an afternoon session outlining USAID's child survival directions.

The Flexible Fund Partners Meeting will be held on October 18, 2006, in Washington DC. This partner's meeting will highlight different approaches to sustainability that may benefit the efforts of Flexible Fund Grantees as well as other partners or organizations. Participants will be exposed to different approaches to sustainability in Community Based Family Planning, and have the opportunity to reflect on their own path to sustainability in your programs and to recommend how Flexible Fund might advance the knowledge base around sustainability in family planning.

More information and registration for both meetings is available on the CORE website.

The Lancet Child Survival Countdown Series: The October 2006 issue of The Lancet contains a series of articles on newborn, child, and maternal survival, including "Countdown to 2015: Tracking Intervention Coverage for Child Survival." While seven countries are on track to meet the Millennium Development Goal of a two-thirds' reduction in under-5 mortality, coverage of the key child survival interventions remains critically low. Children from the poorest families are less likely than those from wealthier families to receive at least six essential prevention interventions. The articles are available on the CORE website at the link below.

LINKAGES Publications CD-ROM: The LINKAGES Project has released a CD-ROM containing all the publications it has produced since 1998. LINKAGES is a USAID-funded program providing technical information, assistance, and training to organizations on breastfeeding, related complementary feeding and maternal dietary practices, and the lactational amenorrhea method -a modern postpartum method of contraception for women who breastfeed. The CD-ROM contains training modules, technical papers, and many other resources. Visit the LINKAGES website to order a copy.

Measuring Commitment to Health: Global Health Indicators Working Group Report: Funders of international development programs are increasingly relying on quantitative indicators to determine which recipient countries are most likely to use aid well. In response to a request from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the Center for Global Development convened the Global Health Indicators Working Group to examine potential measures of a government's commitment to health. The working group report recommends eight indicators for consideration by the MCC and other donors as they assess recipient country readiness to make use of foreign assistance. The indicators are: 1) DTP3 immunization rate; 2) government public health spending; 3) under-five mortality rate; 4) stunting; 5) skilled birth attendants; 6) contraceptive prevalence rate; 7) unmet need for family planning; and 8) access to water.
