CORE Group Receives USAID Funding For Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Planning
CORE Group received funding from USAID to coordinate pandemic preparedness planning efforts in up to five countries (TBD). The $3 million, 2 year effort aims to 1) strengthen the capability of CORE member organizations to minimize human morbidity and mortality due to an influenza pandemic in high-risk, vulnerable areas in which NGOs operate and 2) develop the necessary local partnerships for effective action. In each of the five countries, CORE will host a competitive RFA process to identify a "hosting" organization, preferably a CORE member organization, which would manage the in-country activities.

CORE Activities in Tanzania Contribute to PMI Goals
In 2006 the CORE Group was tasked by the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) to support the Tanzania National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) for one year with a series of activities to be undertaken by U.S and Tanzanian NGOs. These activities were to contribute to the PMI goals of achieving 85% coverage of infants and pregnant women with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). CORE Group contracted with World Vision Tanzania, PSI Tanzania and the IFAKARA Health Research and Development Centre (IHRDC) to implement activities. As part of the Tanzania National Voucher Scheme (TNVS), a program to enable pregnant women to purchase insecticide treated nets at a subsidized price, World Vision trained approximately 6083 reproductive, child health, and government staff on program implementation and developed radio announcements to advertise the program. PSI procured 300,000 long lasting insecticide treatment kits to be bundled with nets and socially marketed to communities. IHRDC collaborated with CDC to monitor and evaluate ongoing TNVS activities. Training materials and reports are currently being translated from Swahili to English. For more information on PMI activities in Tanzania please visit the PMI website:
