Nils Daulaire, Global Health Council
Nils Daulaire, President and CEO of the Global Health Council, gave an overview of the changing landscape of global public health. A slew of new high profile players like Angelina Jolie, Bono, and former President Bill Clinton, along with an influx of funding over the last decade, provides those working in global public health with variety of opportunities and challenges. Daulaire challenged fall meeting attendees to think systematically and to continue to learn from and work collaboratively with one another.
Child Survival Advocacy: Current Directions and Call to Action

Andrew Barrer, Executive Director of the U.S. Coalition for Child Survival, talked about the challenge of advocating for global child survival in a U.S. political landscape that views healthcare as a privilege, not a right. He urged meeting attendees to be more direct in their communications when advocating and to focus on acting locally to influence Senators and Representatives.
Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Planning
Ron Waldman, USAID
Ron Waldman, Team Leader for Humanitarian Preparedness Response with USAID, gave an overview of Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Planning efforts. He noted that USAID efforts are aimed at giving countries the ability to develop their own plans. He also reminded attendees that USAID is aiming for a system of disaster preparedness that integrates with the work being done by global public health workers.

Ellen Coates, Sara Smith, Dora Ward, CORE Group Polio Partners Project
Ellen Coates, the Director of the CORE Group Polio Partners project announced that the project received $30 million in funding for USAID, which extends the project for another five years. In the next five years, Coates is hopeful that the project will be able to enhance and build upon the work that has been ongoing since 1999. Dora Ward, Technical Coordinator for project, presented the highlights from Angola, which over the last year has seen an increase in Polio cases. Sara Smith, Deputy Director for the project, provided an overview of activities in Ethiopia, which has seen no polio cases since 1999.
