National Malaria Coordination Workshops: Angola and Uganda

CORE Group mobilizes its members and partners to grow and strengthen new and existing national collaborative partnerships in which NGOs actively engage in policy formation and innovative programming to scale-up malaria prevention and control as part of a broader community-based health approach.

In 2009, CORE Group Malaria Program partnered with the President's Malaria Initiative Malaria Communities Program and key malaria stakeholders to strengthen the role of civil society organizations through improving communication, collaboration and coordination at the country level.

CORE Group collaborated with malaria programs in Uganda and Angola to strengthen and coordinate the role of NGOs with the respective National Malaria Control Programs.  In each country CORE Group facilitated and supported two National Malaria Coordination Workshops. Each workshop drew over 170 participants representing a wide range of civil society organization, Ministry of Health, private sector, donor and academic malaria stakeholders.

      Results

During the workshops, participants shared state-of-the-art malaria information; identified current malaria program coverage and gaps in their countries; analyzed the national malaria strategy; exchanged experiences and lessons learned; and proposed solutions and recommendations to improve implementation of community-based malaria prevention and control programs and national strategies.

Through collaborative-based activities, CORE Group fosters platforms for malaria stakeholders to develop more efficient ways to coordinate and reach national malaria goals and to advance the effectiveness and scale of community-based malaria prevention and treatment activities. Furthermore, ongoing partnerships help to build and expand in-country networks that are able to leverage combined efforts and create synergies between diverse groups for improved impact.
