AI for Partner Capacity Building

Presenter: Jay Edison (consultant to the CORE Group).

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a methodology for participative planning and partnership building that builds on strengths, values, successes, and cultural uniqueness of partners.

AI is particularly useful for obviating cultural barriers between International NGOs and local partners in less developed countries.

The four Ds of DISCOVERY, DREAMS, DESIGN, and DEMONSTRATION provide a positive framework for planning that avoids the trap of negative circular thinking that so often results from dwelling upon problem lists. It is a sustainable approach because it builds upon local partner capacity and potential. Scary and exhilarating aspects of AI will be illustrated by actual experiences.
