Togetherness: How Governments, Corporations and NGOs Partner to Support Sustainable Development in Latin America Beryl Levinger (EDC). The presentation focuses on the practical implications of a five-country study on inter-sectoral (NGO, government and corporate sector) partnership directed by Beryl Levinger for the Inter-American Foundation. Tools will be demonstrated for mapping, assessing, and strengthening partnerships.

CORE Polio Secretariats: Achievements and Lessons for Other Applications
Bill Weiss (PEI)

Bill Weiss, a member of The CORE Group's Polio Partners' Project Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) shared information about CORE's Polio Secretariat model and how it developed on the ground, examining the achievements of secretariats working in five countries. The presentation includes lessons-learned that can be potentially applied to other global programs, such as Roll Back Malaria.

Beryl Levinger serves as Director of the Center for Organizational Learning and Development (COLAD) at the Education Development Center (EDC). In a typical year, COLAD works with approximately 50 development-oriented, nongovernmental organizations, government agencies, and multilateral institutions to assess and strengthen institutional capacity. Since 1992, Dr. Levinger has also held the appointment of Distinguished Professor of Nonprofit Management at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, an independent graduate school located in Monterey, California. Her academic focus there is on the management of international non-governmental organizations, particularly those engaged in sustainable development in Third World settings.

As a veteran practitioner with more than thirty years' experience in nonprofit management and international education, Dr. Levinger has held many important leadership positions including president of AFS Intercultural Programs and senior vice president of CARE. She is also past vice chair of InterAction and Pact, Inc. (Continued next page)

Her field experience includes ten years in Latin America with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Peace Corps as well as shorter assignments undertaken in over seventy countries.


Bill Weiss is the Deputy Project Director for the CORE Group Polio Partners Project. Bill has been working on the project for over a year and helps the director oversee all aspects of the project with emphasis on documentation, monitoring and evaluation.
