Baby Friendly Communities, Judy Canahuati (CARE).

The Baby Friendly Communities Initiative was started in The Gambia in 1995. CARE Ethiopia visited the program to determine if the Baby Friendly Communities Initiative could be incorporated into their Child Survival project. The initiative is a framework for community mobilization to encourage exclusive breastfeeding, particularly in areas where the majority of births occur in the home.

The 10-steps for using the framework are included in the accompanying PowerPoint presentation. Additional ideas presented included:

  • The 10-steps need to be adapted to the local setting and culture.
  • Support group members from one community visited other communities to begin the implementation process.
  • This framework is being used by CARE in Ghana and is planned for Ethiopia.
