With the exception of immediate care after delivery, postpartum care is often neglected as a priority for maternal and newborn health care. This is despite the fact that most maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period and at least 4 million babies die during the first 28 days of life. A major cause of maternal death is postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), most often in the first 4 hours after delivery. About 90% of deaths from PPH occur in days 0-7. Fortunately, most of these maternal and newborn deaths are preventable. Through Postpartum Care, the well being of both mothers and their newborns can be achieved via prevention, early detection and treatment of complications and existing problems, complications readiness and counseling/health promotion.
