The Maternal and Neonatal Health Approaches of the U.S. Agency for International Development
October 14, 2004
USAID’s approach to maternal and neonatal health fosters community involvement, promotes evidence-based policies, improves access to and quality of health services, and equips birth attendants with the knowledge, skills, drugs and supplies to deliver lifesaving care and reduce the toll of preventable maternal and neonatal mortality. This approach is based on the fundamental principle that women must be able to make decisions regarding their pregnancies and the birth of their children. It is achieved through partnerships with individual women and organizations the represent women from all walks of life. USAID implements maternal and neonatal health programming in four strategic areas: community practices and mobilization, quality services, policy and research.
